We Manage Environmental Impact as Part of the Engineering Process

We consider the protection of the natural environment and the responsible use of resources to be among the fundamental elements of our project management. During the planning, design, and construction phases of our projects, we assess environmental risks and impacts; in accordance with national legislation as well as the international standards required by the projects, we implement monitoring, prevention, mitigation, and improvement measures.

We address our environmental management approach under the following headings: energy and resource efficiency, water management, waste management and the circular economy, combating climate change, biodiversity conservation, and ecological rehabilitation. We regularly monitor environmental performance throughout our field operations and continuously improve our processes based on our findings.

Climate and Resource Management

We integrate solutions that support the efficient use of energy, water, materials, and natural resources into our engineering and field operations. We are working to reduce waste generation at the source, develop opportunities for reuse and recovery, and minimize the environmental footprint of our operations.

We are also applying the circular economy approach to our field operations. We utilize the drilling mud generated by the Tuz Gölü Underground Natural Gas Storage Expansion Project as an alternative fuel at licensed cement plants. This application is one example of our efforts toward resource reuse.

Through an analysis conducted in accordance with the TCFD methodology, we assessed physical and transition risks in the sectors and regions where we operate, as well as opportunities related to energy efficiency, resource optimization, renewable energy, and resilient infrastructure. We aim to develop projects that are more resilient and long-lasting, capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation

In line with our Biodiversity Policy, we take into account the ecological characteristics and sensitivities of the areas where we operate; we conduct studies based on scientific data to prevent and mitigate impacts on flora, fauna, and natural habitats.

In accordance with the Biodiversity Action Plan developed as part of the project, we are jointly carrying out habitat restoration, flora and fauna monitoring, ecotoxicity assessments, and adaptive management efforts. In areas affected by construction activities, we are reusing topsoil while preserving it; we are implementing measures aimed at rehabilitation using local species and the restoration of ecological functions.

Based on data collected from the field, we update our monitoring and management plans and actively manage environmental impacts in response to changing conditions. Through biodiversity awareness training for field staff, we strengthen a culture of environmental responsibility aimed at protecting sensitive habitats and species under protection.

Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and Northern Ring Highway

Comprehensive efforts regarding environmental monitoring, habitat conservation, and reforestation were carried out on the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and the Northern Ring Highway from the construction phase onward.

The flora and fauna components, habitat structure, and ecological sensitivities within the project area were assessed within a scientific framework. Conducted in accordance with IFC Performance Standards and EBRD Environmental and Social Assessment requirements, these studies—which took into account the critical points identified in the ESIA report—included flora surveys, fauna observations, and habitat assessments.

The findings provided data for assessing ecological barrier effects, habitat connectivity, and species’ use of habitats, as well as for monitoring environmental impacts and planning necessary mitigation measures.
