5,500 Kilometers of Cable Were Laid During the Installation of the Inclined Suspension Cable

– Installation of the inclined suspension cables on the Third Bridge Project is nearing completion. To date, the cables used in the inclined suspension cables have reached 85 percent of the total length, meaning approximately 5,500 meters of cable have been installed.

In the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge and Northern Marmara Highway Project implemented by ICA, the installation of the inclined suspension cables—one of the two systems that will support the bridge—is nearing completion. The installation of 156 of the inclined suspension cables has been completed. In the 3rd Bridge Project, installation of more than four-fifths of the inclined suspension cables—which will be used to hoist the 44 steel deck sections across the main span—has been completed.

The 3rd Bridge Construction Site Manager stated, “As of the end of October, 21 steel deck panels have been installed on the European side and 20 on the Asian side, including the D00 transition segment. "Despite the adverse weather and sea conditions we encountered in October, we achieved our target by the end of the month as planned. The completed steel deck sections were hoisted using 156 inclined suspension cables. "A total of nearly 5,500 kilometers of cable was used in these cables. This figure accounts for approximately 85 percent of our total length," he said.

Noting that a change will be made in the process of installing the inclined suspension cables after the 21st steel deck, the 3rd Bridge Construction Site Manager said, “We will now begin lifting the steel decks arriving by sea using suspension cables. In other words, according to our new construction method, not only the inclined suspension cables but also the suspension cables we will attach to the main cable will begin to play a role in transporting the steel deck sections. For this reason, the last two cables—the 21st and 22nd inclined suspension cables—will be attached at different stages according to our construction method.”

With a total weight of 8,787 metric tons, the lengths of the inclined suspension cables range from 154 to 597 meters. The total length of the strands inside the ducts—which have diameters ranging from 225 to 315 millimeters—reaches up to 6,500 kilometers. Each strand contains seven wires, each with a diameter of 5.2 millimeters.
