An advanced tunnel engineering project strengthening transportation in northern Istanbul

IC İçtaş İnşaat is continuing construction work on the Sarıyer-Kilyos Tunnel project, which was launched to strengthen Istanbul’s northern transportation network. With a total length of 13.8 kilometers, the project aims to make transportation in the region safer, faster, and more comfortable by reducing travel time between Sarıyer and Kilyos from 30 minutes to approximately 5 minutes.

The twin-tube tunnel is being excavated using a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) with a diameter of 13.65 meters. The combined use of TBM and NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) techniques in the project ensures the application of advanced tunnel engineering solutions suitable for varying geological conditions. Upon completion, it will be Turkey’s longest TBM tunnel of this diameter, spanning 4,815 meters.

One of the project’s most striking engineering structures, the CAVERN, is being built as Turkey’s largest CAVERN structure. With its large-span underground volume, advanced rock engineering, comprehensive geotechnical analyses, and construction processes requiring high precision, it is one of the project’s most technically prominent components.

In addition to its engineering solutions, the Sarıyer-Kilyos Tunnel is notable for being one of the first examples in Turkey of a large-scale transportation infrastructure project financed through bond issuance. Combining an innovative financing model with advanced tunnel technologies, the project stands among IC İçtaş İnşaat’s key reference projects, reflecting the company’s expertise in large-scale transportation infrastructure, tunnel engineering, and underground structures.

Key Features

It is a strategic highway tunnel project that strengthens Istanbul’s northern transportation network.

The tunnel, excavated using a TBM with a diameter of 13.65 meters, will be Turkey’s longest TBM tunnel of this diameter upon completion, with a total length of 4,815 meters.

The CAVERN constructed as part of the project is the largest CAVERN structure in Turkey.

It covers advanced tunnel engineering applications that combine the TBM and NATM methods.

It will improve regional accessibility by reducing the travel time between Sarıyer and Kilyos from 30 minutes to approximately 5 minutes.

It stands out as one of the first examples in Turkey of a large-scale transportation infrastructure project financed through a bond offering.

IC İçtaş Construction’s expertise in advanced tunnel engineering, large-scale underground structures, and transportation infrastructure is evident.
